How Much Leather Does an Armchair Take? A Practical Guide

One of the most common questions before buying leather is: how much do I need? Ordering too much wastes money. Ordering too little leaves you stranded mid-job. This guide gives you real numbers for the most common furniture.
How is leather measured?
Leather is sold by the square foot (ft²). A standard cowhide runs between 40 and 60 square feet, depending on the size of the animal.
To work out how much you need, add up the area of every surface you will cover and add a 10–15% margin for cuts, waste and mistakes.

How to calculate it yourself
If your piece is not in the table, follow these steps:
- Measure every surface you will cover (in centimeters): length × width.
- Convert to square feet: divide the result by 929 (1 ft² = 929 cm²).
- Add up all the surfaces.
- Add 15% as a margin for cuts and waste.
Example: A back panel of 90 cm × 80 cm = 7,200 cm² ÷ 929 = 7.75 ft². With a 15% margin: 7.75 × 1.15 = 8.9 ft² for that back panel.
Tips so you do not come up short
- Always order a little extra. Better to have leftovers than to stop the job halfway. One extra hide costs far less than delivering late to your customer.
- Order from the same lot. Leather lots can vary slightly in tone. If you need more later, the color may not match exactly.
- Account for the pattern. If the leather has a texture or a directional pattern (as some embossed leathers do), you will need more material to keep the pieces aligned.
- Furniture with buttons or tufting needs up to 20% more leather because of the material the pleating eats up.
How much leather for a full living room set?
If you are covering a living room set (3-seat sofa + 2 armchairs), figure on:
- 3-seat sofa: ~80 ft²
- 2 standard armchairs: ~60 ft² (30 each)
- Total: roughly 140 ft² — 3 standard-size hides (45–50 ft² each)
