How to Choose Leather Thickness for Automotive Upholstery

One of the questions we get most often from automotive upholsterers is: what leather thickness should I use? The short answer: it depends on the area of the vehicle. The long answer is this guide.

Why does thickness matter in automotive upholstery?

Leather thickness (also called weight or gauge) directly affects three things:

  • Durability: Leather that is too thin in a high-wear area will wear out fast.
  • Ease of working: Leather that is too thick is hard to work around curves and tight seams.
  • Final finish: The wrong thickness can make the upholstery look bulky or loose.

The most common thicknesses and what they are for

0.6 mm to 0.8 mm — Thin leather

Ideal for:

  • Dashboards and consoles where the leather is purely decorative
  • Door panels in areas without frequent contact
  • Headliners

This weight is very manageable, folds easily and glues well. It is not recommended for seats because it does not hold up to daily rubbing.

0.9 mm to 1.1 mm — Standard thickness

The most used weight in automotive upholstery. Ideal for:

  • Front and rear seats
  • Center armrests
  • Seat backs

It offers the best balance of durability and workability. It sews well by machine, stands up to daily use and looks professional.

1.2 mm to 1.4 mm — Heavy duty

For high-wear areas or work vehicles:

  • Driver's seat in taxis, trucks or delivery vehicles
  • Steering wheel covers
  • Truck and bus upholstery

Harder to sew around tight curves. A heavy needle (110/18 or 120/19) and waxed thread are recommended.

1.5 mm or more — Thick leather

Not common in standard automotive upholstery. It is used mainly in custom projects or in very specific areas that need rigidity, like structural seat bases.

Other factors to weigh besides thickness

Surface finish

Smooth-finish leather resists dirt better and is easier to clean — ideal for work vehicles. Textured leather (napa, corrugated) looks more premium but can trap dust in the pores.

Tanning

For automotive upholstery, chrome-tanned leather is recommended. It is more flexible, more moisture resistant and holds its color better over time than vegetable-tanned leather.

Color

Dark colors (black, dark brown, gray) hide wear and dirt better in high-use areas. Light colors look more elegant but need more upkeep.

Installation tips by thickness

  • For 0.6–0.8 mm leather: use contact adhesive on dashboards and smooth surfaces. It does not need much tension.
  • For 0.9–1.1 mm leather: sew with a 90/14 or 100/16 needle and waxed nylon or polyester thread.
  • For 1.2 mm leather or heavier: use a 110/18 needle, slow the machine down on curves, and lightly dampen the leather if it is very stiff.
