This is the question that defines the whole project, and it is worth settling before you quote a single meter of leather.

Projects that DO require certified materials

If the aircraft flies under a standard airworthiness certificate — executive jets like Gulfstream, Learjet, Citation, Challenger, or commercial helicopters — the interior materials must meet fire, smoke and toxicity standards. The most common reference is the FAA's FAR 25.853 (vertical burn test); in Mexico, interior modifications are overseen by AFAC.

In those cases the leather must come with a factory flame-retardant treatment and a burn-test certificate for the lot. Installation is normally signed off by an authorized aviation shop — the upholsterer works alongside them.

Industry tip: never agree to upholster a certified aircraft with uncertified leather, no matter how much the customer wants to save. If the authority reviews the modification, the aircraft is grounded and the liability falls on whoever installed the material.

Which leathers are used in executive aviation

Full grain leather with a semi-aniline finish

The standard in high-end jets. Full grain keeps the natural surface of the hide and the semi-aniline finish adds protection without losing softness. It gives a premium hand, ages well and breathes — important in pressurized cabins where the air is dry.

Perforated leather

Very common in aviation seating and luxury cars. The micro-perforations help the seat breathe and shave a little weight — on an aircraft, every gram counts.

OEM-grade automotive leather

For jet-style projects without certification, OEM-grade automotive leather is the smartest choice. It already comes treated against UV, friction and extreme heat — exactly the conditions inside a cabin.

What NOT to use

  • Residential upholstery leather without UV treatment: it fades and hardens under the sun through the windows
  • Cheap synthetics: cabin temperature swings crack them within a year or two
  • Very thick hides (above 1.4 mm): they weigh more and fight you on French seams and diamond stitching

Common mistakes in aviation and jet-style upholstery

  1. Quoting before settling whether certification is required. The price gap between OEM automotive leather and FAR 25.853 certified leather can be several times over.
  2. Using ordinary foam with certified leather. On certified aircraft, the foam and the thread must meet the standard too. The whole assembly is certified, not just the leather.
  3. Ignoring weight. On a real aviation project, reporting the weight of installed material is part of the job. Ask for the spec sheet with the weight per square meter.
  4. Picking trendy colors without thinking about maintenance. Cream and bone dominate in jets, but they demand constant cleaning. A light gray or cognac gives the same luxury with less fight.
  5. Not documenting the work. Jet and luxury van owners pay for traceability: keep process photos, lot numbers and spec sheets.
